Their story

Meet Ellen Bright of Grapevine, Texas — Ellen is a single parent of two grown children. She grew up in a middle class family with eight children. Her mother taught energy conservation to the family well before it was in vogue to do so. Ellen is a project manager currently looking for employment, so keeping her energy bills down in the heat of the summer is more important than ever. Ellen is the “do-it-yourself” type and looks forward to getting new ideas and the $5,000 allowance to improve her home’s energy efficiency. She is competitive and ready to win the $30,000 TXU Energy Power Saver Challenge Grand Prize.

Their goals

Ellen believes her family can win the TXU Energy Power Saver Challenge because her home has plenty of room for energy performance improvement. She believes her family's participation will help raise public awareness about this issue, and that is an added motivator. Ellen is up to the challenge of finding ways to enhance her home and believes she has specific improvement opportunities with her windows and doors. She hopes to find other ways to prevent energy escaping to the great outdoors. Ellen is like many North Texans in her desire to improve the efficiency of her home and reduce her energy costs.

Other essay entries

This is my first home to own and I have little experience with making and keeping it energy efficient. I know my house has great potential for saving energy and I am looking forward to following the contestants and learning from their improvements. If I can learn to reduce my energy usage there will be more for others. I am excited about this opportunity!
